Ribera publishes a children's story to teach children to identify foods with a high sugar content

    • "Julia and cheat foods" is the first children's story aimed at children between 5 and 10 years of age with diabetes to better control their disease, but also at the general children's public, to identify healthy foods
    • The story, endorsed by health professionals from the group, helps to identify "cheat" foods that seem healthy, but have sugar

Valencia, November 14, 2022.-   The health group Ribera He has published his first children's story to teach children between the ages of 5 and 10 to identify foods with a high sugar content and to be able to easily control their glucose.

"Julia and the cheat foods" is an original illustrated story that, through its story and drawings, teaches the little ones that there are foods that, although they seem healthy, contain a high glucose content. The objective of this initiative is to bring the disease closer to children, with and without diabetes, so that they understand the importance of maintaining a correct diet. Stories like this strengthen child patients who suffer from this disease and encourage their learning and autonomy. In addition, it means going a step further in health care, committing to initiatives that humanize medical care.

This action is part of the commemoration of World Diabetes Day and is an opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on people's health. The motto of 2022 year on this day that promotes the OMS is “Education to protect tomorrow”, with the aim of strengthening access to quality diabetes education for both professionals and people living with diabetes, care providers and society in general.

The children's story was born as a didactic tool that Ribera health professionals will use within the community action plan in their areas of influence. As of today, health professionals will contact infant and primary education schools in order to organize a training calendar on diabetes.

From Ribera, we invite parents and teachers to make use of this material.

    Why is diabetes important?

The number of people living with diabetes in the world has increased from 108 million to 420 million in the last thirty years. 14% of the population in Spain has diabetes, that is, around 6 million people, and both the incidence of type 2 diabetes, the most common (90-95% of cases), and type 1 diabetes, is growing every year. It is estimated that 40% of people with diabetes are unaware of their condition.

The burden of disease associated with diabetes is enormous and growing: in just 20 years, diabetes mortality has increased by 70% worldwide.
