The history of Povisa Hospital begins in the late sixties, when a group of prestigious doctors from Vigo decided to unite their respective clinics in a single space. Although the company as such was founded in 1969, it was not until March 1973 when the hospital building was inaugurated on Salamanca Street in Vigo.
In those first years, Povisa offered citizens the specialties existing in the clinics of its founders, in addition to cancer treatment systems with isotopes and the cobalt bomb, which placed the Oncology Service at the technological forefront of the time. . As a result of the tragic accidents in a shipyard and a cannery, a Burns Unit was created that would be a pioneer in Galicia.

Over the years, the hospital modernized and grew, reaching agreements with the Social Institute of the Navy and Insalud, and in 1983 the last major expansion of the building began, which raised the number of beds at Povisa to 700. At the end of 1996, the Nosa Terra Group began to manage the hospital. The technological renewal continues, the consolidation of the agreement with the Galician Health Service and the growth of private specialties.
In December 2019, the Ribera healthcare group acquired 93% of the shares. Its reference shareholder is Vivalto-Santé, the third largest French private healthcare group, with 50 hospitals and clinics in France with whom it shares values and work philosophy based on valuable medicine.
Currently, Povisa is part of the Association of Hospitals of Galicia (Ahosgal), and complies with the Ethical Commitment and Good Practices based on transparent management to ensure quality healthcare, and has the prestigious quality healthcare accreditation. and security, the Joint Commission International.
